NOLA or Bust!

Emma’s Parlor at NOLA Fringe 2013

emmasparlour_11

We, Lorna Howley and Martina Plag, announce with much delight and
humility the honor of having been invited to perform their toy theater
piece, “Emma’s Parlor” as one of only twenty-four selected New
Orleans’ “Fringe-Managed Venue” shows at NOLA Fringe 2013. Fresh
with excitement from our performances at the 10th International Toy Theater
Festival at St. Ann’s Warehouse this summer, we created several new scenes
just for NOLA Fringe 2013 that they can hardly wait to share with our Philly
and NOLA audiences.

Emma’s Parlor is back!

We (Lorna Howley and Martina Plag) are excited to announce that Emma’s Parlor has been invited to Great Small Works’ 10th International Toy Theatre Festival. And are scheduled to perform Friday, June 14th and Saturday June 15th at 7:30pm at St. Ann’s Warehouse! Come and check us out.

Emma’s Parlor is adapted from Howard Zinn’s play about the life and times of Emma Goldman. Using wit, humor, a toy-theater and puppets inspired by late 19th and early 20th century illustrations as well as everyday objects one might find in a parlor, of that same period, as playing spaces, Lorna Howley and Martina Plag illuminate history from below as they begin with Emma’s emigration to the U.S. in 1885 and move through her life as a factory worker, anarchist, lecturer, and free-spirited thinker who is exiled from the United States in 1919 because of her outspoken views.

A phonograph becomes a café filled with anarchists, a radio serves as Emma’s lectern, and a birdcage becomes a prison.

Join us as Puppet Manualfesto celebrates short-form puppetry and community, embracing a multitude of performance aesthetics. If it involves puppetry, mask work or object theatre we want to see and share it with everyone else. Our host Rod Icchio ushers in a night filled with short gems of live puppetry, music by our house band Up Your Cherry, our house troupe F.O.P.I (found object puppet improve) and short film screenings between set-ups. Audiences will see puppeteers performing edgy and provocative works that won’t be seen in mainstream venues. Content ranges from the raunchy and risqué to the tender and tear-jerking, in a fast moving succession of both rough and polished acts. Watch as artists redefine conventional notions of puppetry. Sock-puppet mayhem may ensue as puppeteers breed new strains of creativity.
